THE STEPS TO OBTAIN YOUR FULL CLASS 6 LICENSE

STEP 1:
TAKE YOUR KNOWLEDGE TEST FOR CLASS 6l/8l

  • Book your KNOWLEDGE TEST WITH ICBC for Class 6/8L. It is a computer test with 40 multiple choice questions, and available in multiple languages. To study for the test, you should read the LEARN TO RIDE SMART guide from ICBC. Applicants under 19 requires parental consent.
  • When you pass your knowledge test you can: RIDE a motorcycle BUT you must be within sight of a qualified supervisor. Your supervisor must be at least 19 years old (if you hold a Class 8L your supervisor must be at least 25 years old) and must hold a valid Class 6 full-privilege license.
  • You cannot ride over speeds of 60km/hr NOR take on passengers.
  • You CAN RIDE during daylight hours only (sunrise to sunset).
  • BOOK YOURSELF INTO A MOTORCYCLE COURSE . No school can teach you unless you have a Learner's License.
  • There is a date on your learners license on when you can take the MSA/MST. Taking a course at a school bypasses that 14 day waiting period. You do not have to wait to sign up at the school.

step 2:
challenge the msa/mst

When you complete the ICBC approved school curriculum of learning how to ride, you may challenge the Motorcycle Skills Assessment (MSA) to remove your restrictions. You will get 2 attempts.

Once you pass the MSA you can:

  • RIDE without a supervisor
  • RIDE during daylight hours only (sunrise to sunset)
  • RIDE past the 60km/hr restriction
  • NOT take on passengers
  • START preparing for your road test

NOTE: YOUR 6L LICENSE EXPIRES ON THE ANNIVERSARY DATE OF YOUR KNOWLEDGE TEST. NOT A YEAR FROM YOUR MSA/MST DATE.

step 3:
practice! practice! Practice!

Everyone is different in terms of how much time they will need to be ready for the ICBC road test.

One of the purposes of getting some of your restrictions lifted after your MSA/MST is so you can start practicing independently.

Be sure to re-read the ICBC “Learn to Ride Smart” as well as the "Tuning Up for Riders" and refamiliarize yourself with the rules of the road, road lines and road signs.

Get out on the streets and ride as much as you can. Road test applicants with significant street time are more likely to pass the road test on the first attempt. Keep in mind: While riding, make sure to follow every rule, every time! You are being tested on your knowledge and adherence to the rules of the road! Riding a bike 1000km in the dirt, on the racetrack or primarily on highways is not adequate preparation for this test!

Your 1000km should ideally include a balanced mix of city streets and highway time. Road tests are conducted “rain-or-shine”. Make sure to practice your rain-riding so that you are confident on test-day no matter what Mother Nature brings on that day.

Additionally, you can sign up for extra traffic classes and Mock Road Tests outside of your course package (fee involved).
